Cricket of the day - England vs India at Lord's, 1990

Plenty to love here. As if Azhar's silky off side shots aren't enough, you'll almost certainly enjoy Kapil Dev mullering fat-arsed Eddie Hemmings for sixes all over the shop. Great bowling from Gus Fraser in the days when he was quite fast. Bad Devon playing this game.

  1. Sublime knock from Shastri as well. Nothing beats that skippity-hop-dump-it-in-the-stands.

I blame this series and the Windies tour of 91 for my slightly gung-ho approach with the bat -- if Mohammad Azharuddin can send it to the boundary in a millionth of a second with a flick of the wrists or Viv Richards send it crashing through point with a flamboyant swish, I can too, right? Wrong.

For the Kapil Dev sixes, worth noting that though he took them off an overweight 2nd XI spinner, he did have the pressure of being nine down with a man batting in glasses at the other end. If he hadn't got 24 off that over India would have had to follow on.

Speaking of overweight, look at the size of John Morris! Test cricket before about 1996 was brilliant -- apart from the terrifying West Indian bowlers, basically everyone looked like a club player.

  2. Haha, yup. Balls of steel. Gooch, Gatting, Morris...very rare you'd see anyone get bowled around the legs in those days.
